QUINTO DOMINGO DESPUES DE TRINIDAD
La sabiduría loca de Cristo llama a los pecadores a seguirle, no porque seamos dignos, sino porque Él es misericordioso.

Simón Pedro sabía que Jesús debía estar fuera de sí. Todo pescador vive según la sabiduría del agua, el momento preciso, el lugar correcto. Como profesional, Simón sabía que pescar en aguas profundas durante el calor del día era peor que una pérdida de tiempo; era necedad. Cualquier niño del pueblo podría habérselo dicho. Parecía que todos lo sabían, excepto Jesús. Pero la necedad de Dios es más sabia que la sabiduría de los hombres. Diciendo: "Maestro, en tu Palabra", Simón se lanzó a la mar de todas maneras. Aunque no tenía sentido, Jesús produjo una pesca que superó todo lo que estos pescadores experimentados creían saber. Entonces, Jesús hizo algo que podría parecer aún más necio. El Pescador de Hombres se volvió hacia Simón y sacó un 'pez' propio.
Llamó a Simón a seguirle.
¡¿Yo?! Simón debe haber pensado. ¡Apártate de mí, Señor, que soy hombre pecador! Así no se hace esto. No es aquí donde el Cristo encuentra a sus seguidores. ¡Ve a los eruditos, los teólogos, la gente religiosa! ¿Qué haces llamándome a mí? ¿No sabes quién soy, cómo he vivido mi vida? ¡No conoces los errores que he cometido! Bueno, supongo que sí los conoces... pero yo soy ese pez viscoso de la parte más profunda y oscura del lago, soy la última persona a quien deberías estar llamando. ¡Señor, así no se debería hacer esto! ¡Yo no!
Pero Cristo no ha venido por los sabios, poderosos y justos de este mundo, ¡ha venido por ti! Ahora mismo, en este momento, también te está llamando a seguirle. Él conoce todo lo que hay en tu corazón; pero aún así te llama. Envía a sus predicadores a echar la Red de Su Palabra, el mensaje de la Cruz, la única esperanza verdadera para este mundo quebrantado. Jesús vino por los pecadores. Vino por los débiles, los despreciados y los enfermos. Vino por aquellos cuyas vidas son un desastre, que están llenos de pesar y claman por paz. No vino por los perfectos, o siquiera los 'buenos', (¡de hecho dice que no hay personas así!), sino que un Doctor no viene por los sanos sino por los enfermos. Si eres pecador, Jesús es para ti.
Aquí está la necedad de Dios, la necedad de la cruz, el corazón de nuestra predicación. Dios te ama y se entregó a la muerte por tu causa, aunque no lo merezcas. Derramó Su sangre para perdonarte. Te lava con agua y la Palabra, limpiándote del pecado, sacándote de las aguas bautismales como uno de los peces del lago. Te hace suyo y te da vida eterna. Todo esto es un regalo gratuito de Su misericordia, ofrecido no porque seas bueno, sino porque Él es bueno. No porque seas sabio, sino porque Él es la Sabiduría misma. No porque seas fuerte, sino porque Él es tu Salvador Fuerte. Aunque parezca que está fuera de sí, Jesús es para ti, envió Su Red (la Predicación de la Cruz), te está atrayendo a Su Iglesia (la barca) y te está llamando a seguirle. ¡Suelta tu red!
Dios todopoderoso, cuya locura es más sabia que la sabiduría humana, Tú echas la red de Tu Palabra en las profundidades de nuestros corazones pecaminosos y nos atraes hacia Ti mediante la predicación de la Cruz. Así como llamaste a Simón Pedro de sus redes para seguirte, concede que nosotros, aunque pecadores indignos, escuchemos Tu voz que nos llama al discipulado. Fortalece nuestra fe para confiar en Tu misericordia en lugar de nuestra propia justicia, y haznos pescadores fieles de hombres por Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, quien vive y reina contigo y el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, ahora y para siempre. Amén.

Fifth Sunday after Trinity
Christ's foolish wisdom calls sinners to follow Him, not because we are worthy, but because He is merciful.

Simon Peter knew Jesus must be out of His mind. Every fisherman lives by the wisdom of the water, the right time, the right place. As a professional, Simon knew that fishing in the deep during the heat of the day was worse than a waste of time; it was foolishness. Any child in the village could have told you that. It seemed everyone knew it, except for Jesus. But the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of men. Saying, “Master, at your Word”, Simon put out to sea anyway. Even though it made no sense, Jesus brought forth a catch of fish that was beyond everything these seasoned fishermen thought they knew. Then, Jesus did something which might appear even more foolish. The Fisher of Men turned to Simon and pulled up a 'fish' of His own.
He called Simon to follow Him.
Me!!? Simon must have thought. Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man! This isn't how it's done. This is not where the Christ finds His followers. Go to the scholars, the theologians, the religious people! What are you doing calling me? Don't you know who I am, how I have lived my life? You don’t know the mistakes that I have made! Well, I suppose you do… but I am that slimy fish from the deepest darkest part of the lake, I am the last person you should be calling. Lord, this isn’t how it should be done! Not me!
But Christ has not come for the wise, powerful and the righteous of this world, He has come for you! Right now, in this moment, He is also calling you to follow Him. He knows everything in your heart; but still He calls you. He sends His preachers to cast the Net of His Word, the message of the Cross, the only true hope for this broken world. Jesus came for sinners.
He came for the weak, the despised, and the sick. He came for those whose lives are a mess, who are filled with regret and cry out for peace. He did not come for the perfect, or even the ‘good’, (in fact He says that there aren’t any people like that), but a Doctor comes not for the healthy but the sick. If you are a sinner, Jesus is for you. Here is the foolishness of God, the foolishness of the cross, the heart of our preaching. God loves you and gave Himself up to death for your sake, even though you do not deserve it.
He poured out His blood to forgive you. He washes you with water and the Word, cleansing you from sin, pulling you up from baptismal waters like one of the fish in the lake. He makes you His own and gives you eternal life. This is all a free gift of His mercy, offered not because you are good, but because He is good. Not because you are wise, but because He is Wisdom itself. Not because you are strong, but because He is your Strong Savior. Even though it might seem like He is out of His mind, Jesus is for you, He sent down His Net (the Preaching of the Cross), He is drawing you into His Church (the boat) and He is calling you to follow Him. Drop your net!
Almighty God, whose foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, You cast the net of Your Word into the depths of our sinful hearts and draw us to Yourself through the preaching of the Cross. As You called Simon Peter from his nets to follow You, grant that we, though unworthy sinners, may hear Your voice calling us to discipleship. Strengthen our faith to trust in Your mercy rather than our own righteousness, and make us faithful fishers of men through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
