SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA: REMINISCERE
Dios nos ama tanto que luchará con nosotros, incluso hasta lastimarnos, para salvarnos de nosotros mismos y para que la fe domina la desesperanza.

El domingo pasado, nuestro Señor Jesucristo fue al desierto para luchar con el diablo y derrotarlo. Hoy, Él viene aquí para pelear contigo. Vemos a nuestro Señor arrojar a Jacob al suelo y dejarlo incapacitado permanentemente e insultar sorprendentemente a una mujer que suplica misericordia llamándola perro.
Si Jesús mismo fuera el pastor de esta congregación, ¿crees que volverías el próximo domingo? Pero nada de esto parece molestar a Jesús, ni a los que entran en combate con Él. La fe ve el resultado final, se aferra y nunca deja de lado las promesas de Dios. Aunque a menudo lo olvidemos, el Servicio Divino es un lugar de lucha y combate. En nuestras Confesiones Luteranas, la verdadera adoración se define como "la fe que lucha contra la incredulidad y la desesperación". (Tratado sobre el poder y el primado del Papa, 44)
Ser Israel, es ser aquellos que "luchan con Dios". El culto es un lugar muy violento, porque en él, Jesús viene a destruir a nuestros enemigos. Lo vemos luchar contra el diablo y nos regocijamos de que nuestro opresor haya sido derrocado. Pero mi otro gran enemigo soy yo mismo y esas cosas que he convertido en mis dioses. ¿Me ama Dios lo suficiente como para salvarme de mí mismo? Sí, y si salvarte implica lastimarte, Él no se detendrá. Él te ama lo suficiente como para hacer lo que sea necesario. ¿¡Qué deberíamos sentir acerca de esto!? Un encuentro con Dios es aquel que nos arroja al suelo. Esta mujer sirofenicia, al igual que Jacob, se aferra a las promesas de Jesús con todo lo que tiene.
Se encoge de hombros ante los moretones, hunde sus dientes en la Palabra de Dios y ruega por una bendición. "Mejor es entrar en el paraíso con un solo ojo, cojo y quebrantado, que ser arrojado entero a los fuegos del infierno". (Mateo 18:8-9.) Como Job declara: "Aunque me mate, en él esperaré" (Job 13:15) Pero a Dios le agrada luchar con nosotros, porque es la lucha con la humanidad lo que trae su salvación. Los hijos de Jacob lucharán contra su Señor hasta el suelo, lo clavarán en una cruz, lo herirán y lo matarán. Él no usa Su poder, sino que se deja sujetar. Hijos de Israel, solo si nos aferramos a este Cristo crucificado por fe, recibiremos nuestra bendición. Como por las aguas del Jabbock, nuestro Señor nos arroja a las aguas del bautismo, ahoga al viejo Adán que lucha y pelea contra Él, concediéndonos Su nombre y expulsando de nosotros a los demonios. La verdadera adoración consiste en la batalla entre la fe y la desesperación, Su Palabra nos mata y luego nos da vida, nunca volveremos a caminar igual. Nunca más podremos confiar en nuestras propias fuerzas. ¡Pero el resultado de tal fe son las bendiciones de la Vida Eterna!

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT: REMINISCERE
God loves us so much that He fights with us, even to the point of wounding us, to save us from ourselves and so that faith will overcome despair.

Last Sunday, our Lord Jesus Christ went into the desert to fight with and defeat the devil. Today, He is coming here to fight you. We see our Lord throw Jacob to the ground and permanently handicap him and surprisingly insult a woman begging for mercy by calling her a dog. If Jesus Himself were the pastor of this congregation, do you think you would come back next Sunday? But none of this seems to bother Jesus, or those who engage in combat with Him. Faith sees the end result, grabs on, and never lets go of the promises of God.
Although we often forget this, the Divine Service is a place of struggle and combat. In our Lutheran Confessions, true worship is defined as “the exercise of faith fighting against unbelief and despair” (Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope, 44) To be Israel, is to be those who “wrestle with God.” The worship service is a very violent place, because in it, Jesus comes to destroy our enemies. We see Him fight against the devil and rejoice that our oppressor is overthrown. But my other great enemy is myself and those things I have made my gods. Does God love me enough to save me from myself? Yes, and if saving you involves hurting you, He will not hold back. He loves you enough to do whatever it takes. What ought we to feel about this!? An encounter with God is one which throws us to the ground.
This Syrophoenician woman, like Jacob, grabs on to the promises of Jesus with all she has. She shrugs off the bruises, sinks her teeth into the Word of God and begs for a blessing. “Better to enter paradise with one eye, lame and broken than be cast whole into the fires of hell.” (Matthew 18:8-9) As Job declares, "Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15)But God is pleased to wrestle with us, because it is struggling with Mankind that brings about their salvation. The Sons of Jacob will wrestle their Lord to the ground, nail Him to a cross, wound Him and kill Him. He does not use His power but allows Himself to be held down. Sons of Israel, only by holding on to this Crucified Christ by faith, will we receive our blessing. As by the waters of the Jabbock, our Lord throws us down into the waters of baptism, drowns the old Adam who struggles and fights Him, granting us His name and casting out the demons from us. True worship consists in the battle between faith and despair, His Word kills us and then makes us alive, we will never walk the same again. We will never be able to rely on our own strength again. But the result of such faith is the blessings of Eternal Life!
