QUINTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA: CANTATE
Aunque destrozamos Sus dones, Dios, el Dador supremo, nos inunda con regalos aún mayores: restauración y gracia en Cristo por el Espiritu Santo.

Como escribe Santiago en su epístola (1:17), nuestro Señor es el máximo dador de dones. Todo lo que poseemos es un regalo de Su mano misericordiosa. Toda la creación, nuestra vida, nuestro aliento, nuestros talentos, nuestras posesiones, han sido dados sin ningún mérito ni dignidad de nuestra parte. De hecho, todos los diez mandamientos de Dios tienen que ver con el cuidado y la preservación apropiados de los buenos dones que Él ha derramado sobre nosotros. Primero Él se dio a sí mismo para ser Dios y fuente de todas las cosas buenas, especialmente de la vida misma (I); Él nos dio Su nombre para invocarlo en toda necesidad y para bendecir al mundo (II), nos dio descanso en Él y en Su Palabra (III), nos dio orden y cuidado a través de los padres y la autoridad gobernante (IV), salud y seguridad en el cuerpo (V), el buen don del santo matrimonio para ser sostenido en pureza y castidad (VI), el don de las posesiones físicas (VII), de una buena reputación y de una comunidad honesta (VIII), y finalmente el mandamiento de vivir en santa satisfacción por los muchos dones que Dios da a cada uno de manera única (IX, X).
Pero, ¿qué hemos hecho con estos dones que Dios nos ha dado? Lejos de estar agradecidos y contentos, hemos tomado estos dones dados por gracia y los hemos estrellado contra el suelo como un niño mimado. Destruimos estos dones y los dones que Él ha dado a los demás. No estamos contentos con los buenos dones que Él nos ha dado, sino que deseamos lo que Dios no nos ha dado y por eso tontamente los cambiamos por basura que creemos que será más satisfactoria. Destruimos el matrimonio y lo cambiamos por el concubinato. Asesinamos a los inocentes y débiles y dañamos el don de nuestros propios cuerpos. Rechazamos a Dios, despreciamos Su Palabra, nos rebelamos contra nuestros padres, nos contaminamos con impurezas sexuales y despreciamos el matrimonio dado por Dios, dañamos a nuestro prójimo y a nosotros mismos de palabra y obra. Por todo esto debemos confesar nuestro pecado y arrepentirnos de nuestros caminos. Si tratamos de manera tan ingrata y abusiva Sus dones de gracia, ¿qué debemos esperar que Dios haga a continuación?
Para nuestra sorpresa, a pesar de que hemos abusado de estos buenos dones, con asombrosa misericordia, Él envía MÁS dones. De alguna manera, estos son dones aún más grandes, de hecho, perfectos para restaurarnos todas las cosas. Él nos da a Su Hijo Jesús en la cruz para derramar Su preciosa sangre para nuestra redención. Él exhala Su Espíritu Santo para darnos el arrepentimiento como un regalo, Él causa nuestro renacimiento por la Palabra. El Espíritu inspira e ilumina las Sagradas Escrituras como un Don Divino para entregarnos a Cristo. A través del Agua y la Palabra, Él nos da el don de la adopción y la salvación solo por gracia. Su Espíritu nos guía a la verdad por la Palabra, dándonos los dones de los frutos del Espíritu Santo. Él nos da el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo para comer y beber. Oh Señor Dios, Dador de todo buen don, que en Tu generosidad infinita nos otorgaste la creación, la vida y todo lo que poseemos, e incluso nos diste Tus santos mandamientos para el cuidado de estas bendiciones; confesamos que, como hijos ingratos, hemos menospreciado y malgastado Tu gracia, tornando Tus dones para nuestra propia destrucción. Sin embargo, en Tu asombrosa misericordia, no nos abandonaste, sino que enviaste el don aún mayor y perfecto de Tu Hijo, Jesucristo, para nuestra redención, y Tu Espíritu Santo para nuestra renovación. Concédenos, te rogamos, corazones verdaderamente arrepentidos por nuestras faltas y una gratitud desbordante por Tu favor inmerecido, para que de ahora en adelante atesoremos y usemos todos Tus dones, especialmente el don de la salvación, para Tu gloria y el servicio de nuestro prójimo; por el mismo Jesucristo, Tu Hijo, nuestro Señor, que vive y reina contigo y el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, ahora y por siempre. Amén.

Fifth Sunday of Easter: Cantate
Though we shatter God's good gifts, He astounds us with even greater ones—restoration and grace through Christ by the Holy Spirit, the ultimate Giver.

As James writes in his epistle (1:17), our Lord is the ultimate giver of gifts. Everything we possess is a gift from His gracious hand. The whole creation, our life, our breath, our talents, our possessions, has been given without any merit or deserving on our part. In fact, all ten of the commandments of God are really about the proper care and preservation of the good gifts that He has showered upon us. First He gave us Himself to be God and source of all good things, especially life itself (I); He gave us His name to call upon in all need and to bless the world (II), He gave us rest in Himself and His Word (III), He gave us order and care through parents and governing authority (IV), health and security in the body (V), the good gift of holy marriage to be held in purity and chastity (VI), the gift of physical possessions (VII), of a good reputation and honest community (VIII), and finally the command to live in holy contentment for the many gifts God gives to each one uniquely (IX, X).
But what have we done with these God-given gifts He has given to us? Far from being grateful and content, we have taken these gifts given by grace and smashed them on the floor like a spoiled child. We destroy these gifts, and the gifts that He has given to others. We are not content with the good gifts that He has given, but we desire what God has not given and so we foolishly trade them for garbage that we believe will be more satisfying. We destroy marriage and trade it for cohabitation. We murder the innocent and weak and harm the gift of our own bodies. We reject God, we despise His Word, we rebel against our parents, we pollute ourselves with sexual impurity and hate God given marriage, we harm our neighbors and ourselves in word and deed. For all this we must confess our sin and repent of our ways. If we so ungratefully and abusively treat His gracious gifts, what should we expect God to do next?
To our surprise; even though we have abused these good gifts, in astonishing mercy, He sends MORE gifts. Somehow, these are even greater, indeed, perfect gifts to restore all things to us. He gives us His Son Jesus on the cross to pour out His precious blood for our redemption. He breathes out His Holy Spirit to give us repentance as a gift, He causes our new birth by the Word. The Spirit inspires and illuminates the Holy Scriptures as a Divine Gift to deliver Christ to us. Through Water and Word, He gives us the gift of adoption and salvation by grace alone. His Spirit guides us to the truth by the Word; giving us the gifts of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He gives us the Body and Blood of Christ to eat and drink. He gives us overflowing riches of grace, peace, contentment, and eternal life. He is indeed the ultimate giver of gifts! Amen.
O Lord God, Giver of all good gifts, who in Your boundless generosity did bestow upon us creation, life, and all that we possess, and even gave us Your holy commandments for the care of these blessings; we confess that we have, like ungrateful children, despised and misused Your grace, turning Your gifts to our own destruction. Yet, in Your astonishing mercy, You did not forsake us but sent the even greater and perfect gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, for our redemption, and Your Holy Spirit for our renewal. Grant us, we pray, truly repentant hearts for our failures and an overflowing gratitude for Your unmerited favor, that we may henceforth cherish and use all Your gifts, especially the gift of salvation, to Your glory and the service of our neighbor; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
