ASCENSIÓN DEL SEÑOR
Cristo es el camino que conduce al Padre.

Antes de su ascensión, los discípulos le preguntan a Jesús: "Señor, ¿restaurarás el reino de Israel en este tiempo?" Los discípulos tienen sus esperanzas puestas en este mundo. Están esperando que Cristo establezca un reino terrenal, como el de Israel en tiempos de Salomón. Sin embargo, la ascensión nos recuerda que Cristo no vino a establecer un reino terrenal, sino a redimirnos de este mundo y llevarnos a un reino celestial y perfecto. Y nos muestra El Camino hacia este reino: Jesucristo. Aun así, al igual que los discípulos, a menudo enfocamos nuestras esperanzas en este mundo y no en el mundo mejor que ha de venir. Aunque el reino de Cristo está en el cielo, nos obsesionamos con una vida mejor en este mundo.
Somos como los israelitas que querían volver a Egipto, aunque Dios los estaba guiando a una tierra mejor. Queremos la libertad, la paz y la justicia eternas de la tierra prometida, pero también queremos la carne y las frutas de Egipto. En la encarnación de Cristo, vislumbramos el Reino de Dios. Él sana a los enfermos, alimenta a los hambrientos, reprende a los malvados y enseña a su pueblo. Y a menudo nos encontramos anhelando estas cosas: "¡Si tan solo Jesús estuviera aquí, todo sería mucho mejor!"
Pero Cristo no vino para que las cosas estuvieran mejor. No vino a crear un pequeño cielo temporal en la tierra. Y no vino a restaurar el reino temporal e imperfecto de Israel. Más bien, Cristo vino para hacer las cosas perfectas. Vino a redimirnos de este mundo y llevarnos al cielo. Vino a reclamar a sus súbditos rebeldes que se perdieron en la Caída y a hacernos herederos amados en la tierra prometida eterna y la nueva Israel. De hecho, ya lo ha hecho. Porque con su descenso del cielo y su sufrimiento y resurrección, Cristo nos ha reclamado, a nosotros sus súbditos perdidos, de la esclavitud del pecado, la muerte y el diablo, y nos ha abierto un camino hacia la vida eterna. Él ha tomado en la cruz el castigo por el pecado que merecíamos.
Con su resurrección, ha conquistado la muerte por nosotros. Y por su sangre purificadora y su intercesión constante a la diestra del Padre, tenemos el perdón de los pecados y somos libres del reclamo de Satanás sobre nosotros. La ascensión es la evidencia segura de la victoria de Cristo y su conquista sobre estos enemigos. El Padre ha aceptado el sacrificio del Hijo y lo ha exaltado a su diestra. Cristo está reinando en su trono, el pecado, la muerte y el diablo yacen derrotados bajo sus pies, y su glorioso reinado nunca terminará. El reino de Dios está establecido y no puede ser removido.
Es más, la ascensión de Cristo nos muestra el camino hacia este reino eterno. Porque Cristo mismo es El Camino. Así como descendió corporalmente en la encarnación para liberarnos de la esclavitud mediante su muerte y resurrección, asciende corporalmente para mostrarnos el Camino a su reino eterno. Por la fe en él, nosotros también ascenderemos en el día final y nos uniremos a él en su reino celestial eterno, donde ya no seremos esclavos, sino hijos amados una vez más, que sirven a nuestro salvador en eterna inocencia, justicia y bienaventuranza. A Cristo nuestro Salvador y el único y verdadero Camino, sea toda la gloria, ahora y por siempre. Amén.

Ascension of our Lord
Christ is the road which takes us to the Father

Before his ascension, the disciples ask Jesus, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?” The disciples have their hopes set on this world. They are waiting for Christ to establish an earthly kingdom, like Israel in the time of Solomon. However, the ascension reminds us that Christ did not came to establish an earthly kingdom but to redeem us from this world and take us to a perfect, heavenly kingdom, and it shows us The Way to this kingdom: Jesus Christ.
Yet, like the disciples, we often focus our hopes on this world and not on the better world to come. Though Christ’s kingdom is in heaven, we fixate on a better life in this world. We are like the Israelites who want to go back to Egypt even though God is leading them to a better land. We want the eternal freedom, peace, and righteousness of the promised land, but we also want the meat and fruit of Egypt. In Christ’s incarnation, we get a glimpse of the Kingdom of God. He heals the sick, feeds the hungry, rebukes the wicked, and teaches his people. And we often find ourselves longing for these things, “If only Jesus were here, things would be so much better!”
But Christ did NOT come to make things better. He did not come to make a little temporary heaven on earth. And he did not come to restore the temporal and imperfect kingdom of Israel. Rather, Christ came to make things perfect. He came to redeem us from out of this world and take us to heaven. He came to reclaim his rebellious subjects who were lost in the Fall and make us beloved heirs in the eternal promised land and the new Israel. Indeed, he already has.
For by his descent from heaven and his suffering and resurrection, Christ has reclaimed us his lost subjects from slavery to sin, death, and the devil and made a way for us to eternal life. He has taken the punishment of sin we deserve on the cross. By his resurrection he has conquered death for us. And by his cleansing blood and constant intercession at the right hand of the Father we have the forgiveness of sins and are free from the Satan’s claim on us. The ascension is the sure evidence of Christ’s victory and conquering of these foes.
The Father has accepted the sacrifice of the Son and exalted Him to his right hand. Christ is reigning on his throne, sin death and the devil lie defeated under his feet, and his glorious reign shall never end. The kingdom of God is established and cannot be shaken. What’s more, the ascension of Christ shows us the way to this eternal kingdom. For Christ himself is The Way. Just as he descended bodily at the incarnation to free us from bondage by his death and resurrection, he ascends bodily to show us the Way to his eternal kingdom. By faith in him, we too shall ascend at the last and join him in his eternal heavenly kingdom, where we shall no longer be slaves but beloved children once again, who serve our savior in eternal innocence, righteousness, and blessedness. To Christ our Savior and the only one, true Way, be all glory, now and forever. Amen.
