PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA: INVOCAVIT
Como Señor Gawain enfrentándose al aparentemente derrotado Caballero Verde, a menudo subestimamos al diablo, un adversario experimentado que se deleita en nuestras fragilidades. Sin embargo, así como Gawain se sorprendió por la resistencia del Caballero Verde, Satanás también fue sorprendido por Cristo.

Hay una vieja leyenda medieval del siglo XII llamada "Señor Gawain y el Caballero Verde". En la historia, un grupo de nobles y caballeros están disfrutando de un banquete una noche cuando un extraño y misterioso caballero vestido todo de verde entra en la sala. Nadie sabe quién es, pero lanza un audaz desafío a todos los asistentes. Quien acepte y cumpla los términos recibirá su reino y la mano de su hija en matrimonio. Las reglas son simples; Su caballero más fuerte debe adelantarse y golpear al Caballero Verde tan fuerte como pueda con su espada, indefenso. Después de un año, el caballero verde devolverá el golpe. ¡El poderoso Señor Gawain da un paso adelante y, con un increíble movimiento de su espada, corta la cabeza del caballero de verde! Al darse la vuelta para recibir los elogios y las risas de sus compañeros caballeros del salón, se sorprende al escuchar una voz desde atrás, "¡Bien golpeado!" dijo la cabeza del caballero verde desde el piso, levantando su cabeza cortada en sus manos, "recuerda, el próximo año es mi turno". El diablo es un viejo dragón antiguo y astuto. A todos los hombres y mujeres que se han enfrentado a él, durante toda la historia del mundo, los ha derrotado con facilidad. Él sabe qué criaturas débiles, frágiles y despreciables somos. Se regocija en ello. Si pensamos que podemos vencer al diablo con nuestro poder, demostramos que somos tontos. Cuando ve al Dios invencible del cielo humillarse para tomar carne humana, es el tentador el que es tentado a ir a la batalla. No puede creer su buena suerte. Como una hiena cazando a un león, espera hasta que Cristo esté debilitado en el cuerpo hasta el punto de morir de hambre y vaya al ataque. Ataca a Cristo donde más le duele, diciendo "si eres el Hijo de Dios", señalando que las masas no creerán en un Cristo débil, humano y sufriente. Tuerce las Escrituras y se burla del Hijo de David. Satanás, ese vil Goliat, tienta al humilde Cristo con una teología de gloria, fama, y poder. Pero Satanás, por astuto que sea, ha subestimado a su enemigo, este manso Hijo de David. Cristo le responde con las piedras lisas de las Sagradas Escrituras, la teología de la cruz y de la fe, que en la debilidad, Cristo muestra su fuerza perfecta. "¡Está escrito!" Aunque el diablo golpee a nuestro gran Caballero, e imagine que lo ha acabado, nuestro Salvador se levanta y le recuerda al diablo que su tiempo ha llegado. ¡Pronto Cristo regresará, y entonces será Su turno de hacer el golpe!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT: INVOCAVIT
Like Sir Gawain facing the seemingly defeated Green Knight, we often underestimate the devil, a seasoned adversary who delights in our frailties. Yet, just as Gawain was shocked by the Green Knight's resilience, Satan too was blindsided by Christ.

There is an old medieval legend from the 12th century called “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” In the story, a group of noblemen and knights are enjoying a feast one evening when a strange and mysterious knight dressed all in green enters the hall. No one knows who he is, but he issues a bold challenge to everyone in attendance. Whoever accepts and fulfills the terms will receive his kingdom and his daughter’s hand in marriage. The rules are simple; their strongest knight should come forward and strike the green knight as hard as he can with his sword, undefended. In one year’s time, the green knight will return the blow. The mighty Sir Gawain steps up and with an incredible swing of his sword, he cuts the head clean off of the knight in green! Turning around to receive the praise and laughter of his fellow knights of the hall, he is shocked to hear a voice from behind, “Well struck!” said the green knight, picking up his severed head, “remember, next year is my turn.” Sir Gawain greatly underestimated his foe, he didn’t know who he was fighting. What about you?
The devil is an ancient and crafty old dragon. Every man and woman who has ever faced him, for the entire history of the world, he has defeated with ease. He knows what weak, fragile, contemptable creatures we are. He rejoices in it. If we think that we can take on the devil by our power, we show that we are fools. When he sees the invincible God of heaven humble Himself to take on human flesh, it is the tempter who is tempted to go to battle. He cannot believe his good fortune. Like a hyena hunting a lion, he waits until Christ is weakened in the body to the point of starvation and goes in for the attack. He attacks Christ where it hurts, saying “if you are the Son of God”, pointing out that the masses will not believe in a weak, human, suffering Christ. He twists scripture and mocks the Son of David. Satan, that vile Goliath, tempts the humble Christ with a theology of glory and power. But Satan, as cunning as he is, has underestimated his foe, this meek Son of David. Christ answers him with the smooth stones of the Holy Scriptures, the theology of the cross and of faith, that in weakness, Christ shows His perfect strength. “It is written!” Although the devil will strike our great Knight, and imagine that he has finished him, our Savior rises up and reminds the devil that his time has come. Soon Christ will return, and then it will be His turn to do the striking!
