Cristo, el fuerte ‘ladrón’ divino, irrumpe violentamente en la fortaleza de Satanás para liberar y reclamar Su tesoro preciado: tú!

¿Alguna vez te has despertado a las 3 de la madrugada pensando que alguien estaba entrando en tu casa para robar? Es una sensación aterradora, la idea de que alguien está dispuesto a hacer violencia para saquear todas tus posesiones más preciadas, ¡sin importar lo que se meta en su camino! Pero quizás lo más sorprendente de todo, es que Jesús se describe a sí mismo como un ladrón. ¡Ha venido a golpear al hombre fuerte, atarlo y robar todas sus posesiones! Una vez más, como en las últimas lecturas del Evangelio, este no es el Jesús "agradable" que la gente espera. ¿Qué significa todo esto?
Para empezar, debemos preguntarnos qué es la "casa" y quién la defiende. La palabra griega aquí para el espacio que el hombre está guardando es el αὐλήν, que es el patio central de una gran villa de estilo romano. Desde aquí, se puede acceder a todas las habitaciones con todos los tesoros en su interior. El guardia lleva una armadura pesada (καθωπλισμένοςφυλάσσῃ) y es extremadamente atento. Esta invasión de casa no se llevará a cabo de manera sigilosa, sino con una violencia increíble "mano a mano". Aquí vemos al diablo, con todo su poder, astucia y mentiras, montando guardia sobre sus preciadas posesiones, el mundo y todos los cautivos que hay en él. Él es "príncipe de este mundo" y junto con sus demonios y hombres bajo la influencia de los demonios, ha encadenado todos sus tesoros en salones oscuros detrás de puertas fuertes. ¡Parece invencible!
¿Y cuál es el tesoro más precioso que este Santo Ladrón ha venido a robar? ¡Eres tú! El diablo ha hecho todo lo posible para mantenerte bajo llave. Él te encierra en la oscuridad con profunda depresión, orgullo, codicia, tentación, aislándote del mundo, destruyendo tus relaciones con el pecado. Te tapa la boca para que no puedas gritar pidiendo ayuda. Te encadena los brazos para que no puedas hacer nada para escapar. Él bloquea tus oídos para que no puedas oír acerca de tu Salvador. Te cubre los ojos con una venda para que no puedas ver la salida. Pero para Jesús, tú eres el tesoro más precioso, y Él, ese Hombre Más Fuerte, viene a buscarte, ¡cueste lo que cueste! Tampoco lo hará en silencio, sino que entra por la puerta principal; derribando a satanás con el poder de Su Santa Palabra y Espíritu. Por ese Espíritu, Él corta las cadenas, quita las vendas de los ojos, abre tus oídos y suelta tu lengua. Tu Señor Jesús es el que asusta y despierta al diablo y a todos sus demonios a las 3 de la madrugada. Él es el Sansón más grande, y los poderes de este mundo tiemblan ante Él. Luchando por Su Cruz, Él derrota a Satanás y lo despoja de su poder. ¡Él te libera y te trae a casa con alegría!

Oh, Cristo, Saqueador Divino de nuestras almas, que irrumpes en la oscuridad de nuestra cautividad, te rogamos: Tú, que con fuerza y amor, despojas al príncipe de este mundo de su poder, libera nuestros corazones encadenados. Tú, que atraviesas las puertas de la desesperación, abre nuestros oídos para escuchar tu voz, nuestros ojos para ver tu luz, y nuestras bocas para proclamar tu nombre. Tú, que rompes las cadenas del pecado y la depresión, y nos liberas de las garras del enemigo, te damos gracias por tu valentía y tu amor inquebrantable. Oh, Señor, que con tu Espíritu Santo, nos despojas de la ceguera y nos conduces a la libertad, te pedimos que sigas irrumpiendo en nuestras vidas, que sigas reclamándonos como tu tesoro preciado. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT: OCULI
Christ, the stronger man and Divine ‘thief’, violently invades the fortress of Satan to liberate and reclaim His most precious treasure: you!

Have you ever woken up at 3am thinking that someone was breaking into your house? It is a terrifying feeling, the idea that someone is willing to do violence in order to plunder all of your most precious possessions, no matter what stands in their way! But perhaps the most surprising thing of all, is that Jesus describes Himself as being such a burglar. He has come to beat up the strong man, bind him, and steal all of his possessions! Once again, as in the last several Gospel readings, this is not the “nice” Jesus people expect. What does it all mean?
To start with, we must ask what the “house” is and who is defending it. The Greek word here for the space which the man is guarding is the αὐλήν, which is the central courtyard of a big Roman style villa. From here, one can access all of the rooms with all of the treasures inside. The guard is wearing heavy armor (καθωπλισμένοςφυλάσσῃ) and is extremely attentive. This home invasion will not be accomplished by stealth but by incredible violence “mano a mano”. Here we see the devil, with all his power, cleverness and lies, standing guard over his prized possessions, the world and all the captives therein. He is “prince of this world” and together with his demons and men under the influence of demons, he has chained up all its treasures in dark halls behind strong doors. He seems invincible! And what is the most precious treasure that this Holy Burglar has come to steal? It’s you!
The devil has tried his hardest to keep you under lock and key. He shuts you in the dark with deep depression, pride, greed, temptation, cutting you off from the world, destroying your relationships by sin. He covers your mouth so that you can’t cry for help. He chains down your arms so you cannot do anything to escape. He blocks your ears so you cannot hear about your Savior. He covers up your eyes with a blindfold so that you cannot see your way out. But to Jesus, you are the most precious treasure, and He, that Stronger Man, is coming to get you, whatever it takes! He won’t do it quietly either, but comes in through the front gate; throwing down satan with the power of His Holy Word and Spirit. By that Spirit, He cuts the chains like butter, removes the blindfolds, opens up your ears and releases your tongue. Your Lord Jesus is the one who frightens and wakes the devil and all his demons at 3am. He is the greater Samson, and the powers of this world tremble before Him. Fighting by His Cross, He defeats Satan and strips him of his power. He releases you and joyfully brings you home!

Oh, Christ, Divine Plunderer in favor of our souls, who breaks into the darkness of our captivity, we pray to you: You, who with strength and love strip the prince of this world of his power, free our chained hearts. You, who pass through the gates of despair, open our ears to hear your voice, our eyes to see your light, and our mouths to proclaim your name. You, who break the chains of sin and depression, and free us from the enemy's grasp, we thank you for your bravery and unwavering love. Oh, Lord, who with your Holy Spirit, brings light and leads us to freedom, we ask that you continue breaking into our lives, that you continue claiming us as your precious treasure. Amen.
