ÚLTIMO DOMINGO DEL AÑO DE LA IGLESIA
La fe salvadora, recibida individual y libremente a través de la Palabra y los Sacramentos de Cristo, es el aceite indispensable que nos sostiene hasta la fiesta eterna.

Por fuera, todas las lámparas se ven iguales. Las jóvenes, vestidas para la fiesta más emocionante de sus vidas, se ven todas iguales; todas han venido por la misma razón, todas participan en las mismas actividades, y todas por igual se quedan dormidas antes de que llegue el Esposo. Solo hay una diferencia, y es invisible para todos, excepto para las mismas jóvenes. La mitad de ellas no tiene aceite.
Parece que han olvidado la razón por la que vinieron en primer lugar. Cuando llega el momento que todas han estado esperando, ya es demasiado tarde. Lo que era invisible ahora queda a la vista de todos. Ahora queda vergonzosamente claro quién trajo su aceite y quién no. Sin luz, tropezando en la oscuridad, paradas a la puerta del banquete, no pueden ser vistas ni reconocidas por el portero y se quedan fuera de la misma fiesta para la cual vinieron. Él ni siquiera sabe quiénes son. Las que tienen aceite brillan en la oscuridad como estrellas en el cielo nocturno, y las que no lo tienen son tragadas por las tinieblas.
Pero Jesús cuenta esta parábola, no sobre una boda ordinaria, sino sobre el Banquete Celestial del Novio, a cuya invitación ustedes han respondido y venido. Ustedes están sentados aquí porque han recibido la invitación, están vestidos y, espero, emocionados por el banquete que viene. Su lámpara está en sus manos y están esperando, con toda la iglesia, al Novio. Todos ustedes vinieron al banquete antes del banquete; están todos reunidos en el mismo lugar y para las mismas actividades, incluso dicen las mismas palabras y, de hecho, todos enfrentarán la misma muerte que yace por delante; uno por uno se dormirán, a menos que el Novio venga primero. ¿Han recordado por qué han venido aquí? ¿Hay aceite dentro de su lámpara?
Este aceite no es otra cosa que la fe salvadora en Cristo, un don que no se puede pedir prestado a un vecino, sino que se recibe individualmente del Señor. Mientras todavía es de día, mientras la puerta permanece abierta, acudan a los "vendedores" de este aceite. Pero a diferencia de los mercados de este mundo, la moneda aquí no es plata ni oro. Aquí, en el Servicio Divino, donde se predica la Palabra y se administran los Sacramentos, el precio de compra ya ha sido pagado con la sangre del Novio. Aquí, Dios da este aceite gratuitamente (Isaías 55:1). Aquí, Dios da este aceite gratuitamente a través de Su Santa Iglesia; Él crea la fe mediante el oír del Evangelio y la fortalece a través de Su cuerpo y sangre.
No descuiden este tiempo de gracia. Oren fervientemente, pidan a Dios que llene su lámpara ahora, para que posean una fe que confíe únicamente en el mérito del Novio y no en sus propias preparaciones. Regresen una y otra vez a esta fuente de gracia y llenen sus lámparas. En el Día Final, este aceite oculto de la fe hará toda la diferencia, alimentando una llama que los revelará como los verdaderos hijos e hijas de Dios.
Cualquier cosa que hagan ahora puede parecer ordinaria, pero la fe transforma estos actos humildes en una luz que brilla ante los hombres para que glorifiquen a su Padre que está en los cielos. Así como los justos en Mateo 25 se sorprenden por el valor de sus propias buenas obras, preguntando: "Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos?", así también se sorprenderán ustedes de que su fe, nacida de la Palabra, produjo naturalmente un testimonio de amor que el Novio reconoce; así como la luz es el producto natural del aceite, así las obras son el fruto natural de la fe salvadora.
Permanezcan firmes en esta fe, porque cuando Él venga, es esta fe sola la que los guiará a través de la oscuridad hacia el banquete eterno del Cordero. La fe salvadora, recibida individual y gratuitamente a través de la Palabra y los Sacramentos de Cristo, es el aceite indispensable que nos sostiene hasta el banquete eterno. Miren a la Lámpara del Mundo, Cristo Jesús. En Él, su lámpara está llena, su luz es segura y la puerta está abierta. He aquí, Él viene pronto.
Señor Jesucristo, Tú eres el Esposo celestial que viene a una hora que no conocemos. Te damos gracias porque no nos has dejado tropezar en la oscuridad, sino que nos has provisto el aceite de la fe salvadora a través de tu Palabra y Sacramentos. Concédenos que nunca descuidemos estos medios de gracia, sino que, atendiéndolos con gozo, mantengamos nuestras lámparas llenas y nuestros corazones preparados; pues Tú vives y reinas con el Padre y el Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios, ahora y siempre. Amén.

Last Sunday of the Church Year
Saving faith, received individually and freely through Christ’s Word and Sacraments, is the indispensable oil that sustains us until the eternal feast.

From the outside, all the lamps look the same. The young ladies, dressed for the most exciting party of their lives all look alike; they have all come for the same reason, they all participate in the same activities, and they all alike fall asleep before the bridegroom comes. There is only one difference, and it is invisible to all but the young ladies themselves. Half of them, do not have any oil. They seem to have forgotten why they came in the first place. When the moment that all have been waiting for arrives, it is too late.
What was invisible is now plain to see. It is now embarrassingly clear who brought their oil and who did not. With no light, stumbling in the dark, standing at the door to the feast, they are not able to be seen and recognized by the doorkeeper and they are left out of the very feast for which they came in the first place. He doesn’t even know who they are. Those with lamp oil shine in the dark like stars in the night sky, and those without it are swallowed up in the darkness. But Jesus tells this parable, not about an ordinary wedding but about the Heavenly Feast of the Bridegroom to whose invitation you have responded and come. You are sitting here because you have received the invitation, you are dressed, and hopefully excited about the coming feast.
Your lamp is in your hands and you are waiting, with all the church, for the Bridegroom. You all came to the feast before the feast, you are all gathered in the same place and for the same activities, you even say the same words, and in fact, all of you will face the same death which lies ahead, one by one you will fall asleep, unless the Bridegroom comes first. Have you remembered why it is that you come here? Is there any oil inside your lamp?
This oil is nothing other than saving faith in Christ, a gift that cannot be borrowed from a neighbor but is received individually from the Lord. While it is still daylight, while the door remains open, attend to the 'dealers' of this oil. But unlike the markets of this world, the currency here is not silver or gold. Here, in the Divine Service, the purchase price has already been paid by the Bridegroom's blood. Here, God gives this oil freely, in the Divine Service where the Word is preached and the Sacraments are administered (Isaiah 55:1).
Here, God gives this oil freely through His Holy Church; He creates faith through the hearing of the Gospel and strengthens it through His body and blood. Do not neglect this time of grace. Pray earnestly, ask God to fill your lamp now, that you may possess a faith that trusts solely in the Bridegroom’s merit rather than your own preparations. Return again and again to this fountain of grace and fill your lamps. On the Last Day, this hidden oil of faith will make all the difference, fueling a flame that reveals you as the true sons and daughters of God. Whatever you do now may look ordinary, but faith transforms these humble acts into a light that shines before men so that they glorify your father in heaven.
Just as the righteous in Matthew 25 are surprised by the value of their own good works, asking, “Lord, when did we see you?” so too will you be surprised that your faith, born from the Word, naturally produced a testimony of love that the Bridegroom recognizes, as light is the natural product of oil, so works are the natural fruit of saving faith. Remain steadfast in this faith, for when He comes, it is this faith alone that will lead you through the dark into the eternal feast of the lamb. Saving faith, received individually and freely through Christ’s Word and Sacraments, is the indispensable oil that sustains us until the eternal feast. Look to the Light of the World, Christ Jesus. In Him, your lamp is full, your light is sure, and the door is open. Behold, He is coming soon.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the heavenly Bridegroom who comes at an hour we do not know. We give You thanks that You have not left us to stumble in the dark, but have provided the oil of saving faith through Your Word and Sacraments. Grant that we may never neglect these means of grace, but attending to them with joy, keep our lamps filled and our hearts ready; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
